You have heard it and you have felt it, diets don't work. The weight loss industry is a multi-million dollar industry, yet, America is getting fatter, our kids are getting fatter, health care costs are out of sight for treating the obesity related diseases. What about aging? Yes, that too. One of the best ways to combat aging is.... controlling weight. But, how what?
Doctors are told to help patients get the weight off. The doctor tells you to eat less and exercise more, it's a life style change. Is it? Well, yes and no. I believe that as we get older, we do need to consume less calories, our metabolism slows down and studies have shown that life spans increases when less calories are consumed. But losing weight is entirely different.
What factors contribute to obesity? Heredity, sedentary life style and poor nutrition. Studies have shown that many overweight people have an increased insulin level. I am not talking about the type I diabetic that has no insulin or the type II diabetic, but the numbers of overweight people who are neither. If you were to measure their insulin levels, many would have levels that are higher than normal. Insulin, helps to move insulin into the cells. When there is an excess of insulin, it acts like a lock on the fat cell, it doesn't let fat out. Increased insulin is due to the decreased insulin sensitivity at the cell level causing to body to make more. The more made, the less fat is released. What about our kids that are fatter? Childhood obesity due to a combination of factors.. heredity, sedentary life style (computer games, television) and poor diets. Do we have to settle? Of course not!
You can take control. Here's how. Understand the fact of your metabolism, understand how hormone levels, great nutrition and the correct supplements and vitamins can change the whole picture. The hormones are insulin, cortisol, DHEA, testosterone, progesterone, growth hormone, estrogen and thyroid play critical roles in your metabolism and the control of your weight. Replacing supplements like magnesium, adding fiber to your diet and the timing of nutritional meals can help to maintain that weight loss. Is it easy? No, but that's only because it takes committment and the mindset to be healthy.
Anti-aging begins with being at a healthy weight. Ask your doctor about vitamin replacement and supplement replacements. What about exercising. Critical, not necessarily for losing weight, but for muscle development, strength, stamina, mental clarity and cardiovascular health. Did you know that studies have shown that taking a brisk 30 minute walk a day can help fend off alzheimers disease?
